Asking the data directly

A business at national scale runs on questions, and almost all of them end up in the same place: a queue. MTN Nigeria is putting Barq in front of its business teams so a question asked in plain language is answered from the company's own governed data, with no SQL, no ticket and no intermediary.

Challenge

A commercial team wants to know which regions are losing active data users. They cannot answer it themselves, so they ask the BI team. The query gets written. The answer comes back accurate, and a few days after it was needed. Multiply that by every team, every week. Bad data has the same shape. It is rarely caught when it arrives; it is caught later, by someone who has already acted on it. Quality issues surface after a dashboard has been read, a report circulated, a decision taken. The correction arrives behind the damage.

Solution

Questions asked in plain language, answered from governed data, with no SQL and no ticket. Data quality monitoring querying the governed platform continuously rather than from a weekly extract. Watching for the faults that actually go wrong: swings in revenue-generating subscribers, subscriber counts that do not line up, call records that never arrived, revenue that will not reconcile, offers that do not match entitlement. Issues surfaced while there is still time to act on them.

Impact

Speed is the obvious gain. Decisions stop waiting on another team's calendar. Capacity is the one that compounds: every question a business team answers for itself is one the data operations team never has to build, and the people who know the data best stop running a service desk. Reconciliation effort drops, because there is less to unpick after the fact, and the dashboards the business runs on become something people trust by default.
